Compressed Air Foam Systems (CAFS): A Superior Choice for Firefighting

Featured Image

CAFS have proven to be the most effective tools in fighting and suppressing class A & B fires.  Managers over structural risk areas and hazards involving flammable liquids have found these units to be the most effective solution adding rapid deployment, reliability & simple operation.

CAFS

Compressed Air Foam Systems (CAFS) are foam systems which inject compressed air into foam concentrate solution to generate a fire-fighting agent with a superior expansion ratio that typical foam fire equipment or foam eductors do not achieve.

This type of foam (CAF) has a much tighter, more dense, bubble structure than foam discharged from a traditional delivery system.  This bubble structure allows the foam to adhere to vertical and horizontal surfaces, as well as penetrate fires deeper before the bubbles are broken down, allowing the latent water to be more effective.

Compressed Air Foam Systems are effective because they attack all three sides of the fire triangle: oxygen, fuel, and heat. CAFS works by smothering the fire with a “foam blanket”, preventing oxygen from combining with fuel, which in turn prevents the fuel from igniting or continuing to burn. It diminishes the heat by insulating (using the trapped air within the bubble structure) and the bubbles reflect radiant heat, thus preventing excess heat from adding to the fire.

How CAFS Are Used

CAFS can be used in a variety of ways, but is most commonly used in a stored-energy assembly; truck-mounted & response vehicle units, and fixed installations.  Burner Fire Control Compressed Air Foam Fire-Fighting Systems have been deployed to offshore oil & gas platforms, helideck & heliport structures, hydraulic fracturing operations involving electric and fuel-driven frac pumping equipment, salt water disposal (SWD), tank battery storage sites for hydrocarbon and fuel storage, and for general fire-fighting response.

Burner designs and manufactures our full line of Compressed Air Foam Systems - allowing us to offer a level of customization that is unmatched in the industry.

There are several standard models and configurations available. Each system can be modified to meet customer specifications. We also have the capability to design and build completely customized systems to client specifications.
